I watched a movie that really spoke to me…….Faith Like
Potatoes. It’s a true story about the
life of Angus Buchan. He has become the
South African “Billy Graham” but it was NOT easy……..and it was a long time
coming!
Here's the thing about potatoes. You plant them, and cover them
with dirt, then pray like mad for rain. With most crops, you can see what
you're going to eat—the fruit of your labors, so to speak. But potatoes
incubate in the ground, silent and mostly unseen, while you hope for harvest. What an amazing metaphor for our Christian
Life!
So, just a couple of weeks ago, I planted some potatoes. Then this spring break week, I have had the
chance to catch up on some projects and plant some corn, okra, squash, peppers
and spinach. I have checked the ground
where I planted those potatoes and could NOT find anything at all. Then, this morning………I saw a few sprouting
potatoes plants bursting through the soil!!!
It caused my heart to leap with joy and reminded me of the movie and the
spiritual laws! I felt like I could hear
the Lord saying, “Don’t grow weary, I’m working!!!”
Wow!!! Just realized that you really have to look closely to see the potato plant sprouting in the middle! :)
Okay, this one is easier to see!! But the first plant is there and growing and producing fruit---underground---although we struggle to see it!
Often we get discouraged when we don’t see the fruit that we have
been eagerly expecting. But we have to
remember that ‘it’s there’ even when we don’t see it right before our eyes.
We all know that our cell phone pick up and transmit signals that
travel through the air. And we trust
that knowledge because it’s been proven and we know that it works even if we
cannot see it. So, if you find your
faith waning and you feel discouraged then remember the fruit is there and it’s
growing……just like potatoes!
After my complete heart transplant (in reference to Max Lucado’s
story), my daily life changed and my goals, my bucket list, actually everything
about my life changed. Now, it’s been almost 10 months without a
television! Wow, the first month was really
tough but now it’s a breeze. It’s not
that I think television is evil. On the
contrary, I think it can be quite helpful but my problem grew as I allowed
myself to be entertained for extended time periods and avoided any real
accountability for my life. I got to a
point of just watching anything that was on rather than doing my Bible study,
planning my day, visiting the sick, helping out my neighbors, calling a friend or
just taking care of business at home. It
became my escape! Oh, I will have a
television again in my life but this time, I will make sure I remember where
that “off” button is located.
So, one change on my bucket list is to go to South Africa and see Angus
Buchan and all the children that he has taken in to raise. He saw the need and didn’t just sit and ask
who will take care of these orphans? He
took them in himself. Wow, what an
amazing work that God has done in his lifetime.
I pray that the fruit of the Holy Spirit is growing in my life…..just
like potatoes…when I can’t see it!!!
P.S. I declare that my fruit trees will produce the expected fruit---just like the pictures on the tag! :)
Thanks for reading and letting me share a slice of my life with you!!! May you be richly blessed on your journey and I'd love to hear from you!!!
P.S.S. I'll post pictures of the fruit in due season..............right now, God is working his Great Mystery!!!!
